Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ101 in the Test

With the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ101 Panasonic extends its travel Zoom series to a new concept: the DMC-TZ101 combines a 1-inch image sensor with a powerful 10 x zoom in a 4.4 cm flat case. We do the test.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ101 in the Test
Sony invented the compact travel camera with 1 inch sensor with its RX100 series. Now, Panasonic put it one and combines the 1 – inch in the Lumix DMC-TZ101 sensor with a 10 x zoom for the price of 700 euros. While waiting for other 1-inch models of this price category, such as Canon’s Power Shot G3, with even greater zoom levels, this is the compact design but then charged. The TZ101, however, remains very pocket friendly with their 111 x 65 x 44 cm.

Sensor and Lens

As usual working of 1-inch CMOS sensor (13.2 x 8.8 mm) 20.1 Megapixels.Which serves as a signal processor “new Venus Engine” with four computing cores. In addition an enormous ISO range from ISO 80 up to 25,600, usefully supplemented by a pop up Flash. While the ISO 25,600 are but more on paper than that they would be useful. The Leica DC VARIO ELMARIT covers very everyday focal length range with small equivalent 25-250 mm a. Very useful is also the integrated optical “5-axis”-image stabilizer, in the telephoto range the light output falls however on 5.9 aperture.

Housing

The black metal housing looks good and weighs moderate 268 g without batteries, but the handle is only very subtly shaped. Why Panasonic also has given up on gums in the grip area, is not to understand: so the camera slips due to their extremely smooth surface slightly out of hand.Remains only the possibility to hedge it with a collar in addition.

Search and Display

The electronic viewfinder is working with 388 666 RGB pixels, and the image in the viewfinder with only 0,46-facher magnification looks a bit small, but optical viewfinder are usually worse in this class. Also convinced the representation by a very clear picture. The firm built 3-inch display offers as well a good image quality with 346.666 RGB pixels. Thanks to the disconnectable proximity sensor, automatically switching between screen and viewfinder. Various recording tools that show in the viewfinder as well as on the display let are practical.
These include various grid and guides, live histogram, 3D-Wasserwaage and cutting markers for image formats. The practical feature of the monitor is well resolved. However, the pop up Flash sits almost centered on the body and so relatively close to the lens, which increases the risk of red-eye. Conversely, the tripod socket outside the optical axis right next to the compartment for the memory card and battery is located: the Lumix stands on a tripod, the photographer can no longer change the memory card.

Operation

The TZ101 has a rotary and a program dial with the classic PSAM modes and various shortcuts of like intelligent automatic, panoramic and video function. Also to access here 22 filter and 24 typical scenes, as well as the three custom settings. Well placed right next to the shutter release button is a direct video button. Also the button for the quick menu in triple occupancy is intuitive to find at the bottom right next to the display with “back” and trash. The photographer can make numerous manual settings of aperture the exposure time to focus on dials and the multi functional ring on the lens. These settings are displayed to check on quasi analogue scales at the bottom of the live view image. Functions can prove also almost every other button except lens ring and wheel.
There are four fn buttons, further five 1-800-whatever are found in the touch menu functions. Highlights preview and Zebra patterns help with exposure, when manual focusing focus magnifying, peaking and black and white preview support. New that is post focus – function, which is located by default on the “Fn2” button. You press it before throwing, the camera saves a series with reduced resolution respectively 8.3 megapixel, from which you can later extract frames with the desired focus point. On the whole the operating concept is self-explanatory, while the main menu is somewhat confusing. Instead of tabs, there is an upper menu level, which is defined on the selected program. In the four or five submenus must it is then up to nine pages long list scroll through.

Video

New TZ series is the 4K-Foto-Funktion (3840 x 2160 pixels) that takes videos with the four-time resolution of full HD at 25 frames per second.Maximum 4K-Filme to 15 minutes are limited. For comparison: in the Sony RX 100 IV is closing after 5 minutes. In addition, the TZ101 full HDs with 50 B / s, and in a special high speed mode (1920 x 1080 pixels) with 100 B / s (sensor output) films. Time-lapse and stop motion are more video specialties of the Lumix.
You can separate single shots by post-focus from a 4K-Bilderserie. So you can pick out exactly the moment for example, when a plunge, when the head touches the surface of the water. Save the image as a JPEG is with reduced resolution of 8 MP. Alternatively also multiple levels of focus can be selected and subsequently put together by a separately available software to a wider range of sharpness (“focus stacking”).

WI-FI

Travel fit of the Lumix is useful rounded off by their WiFi connectivity, so that can be sent or recordings download let go in the Internet. A module does not have the TZ101 though, but GPS data to the images can be stored at least over a Smart phone connection. In addition, Smart phone or tablet can serve as a control monitor or remote control of the TZ101. When it comes to battery life, the camera offers 260 to 300 firings.

Auto focus

To focus, the TZ101 has a hybrid-contrast AF, which is based on the proprietary DFD technology (depth from defocus). It aims to accelerate the contrast auto focus. The DFD method calculates the distance to the subject to 240 times per second and evaluates two recordings with different sharpness levels, taking into account the data coming from the lens. Thus, the Panasonic especially at long focal lengths wants to play out an advantage, what is noticeable in the practice also has a positive. In the laboratory, the TZ101 reached a super fast AF time by only 0.16 s, in low-light situations, however, she needed 0.56 s – the Sony RX100 IV is here with 0.3 s faster. In the continuous shooting mode the TZ101 has clearly: it creates now fleet 9.1 JPEGs/s and this until the card is full. RAWS are limited even faster 9.5 B / s to 15 shots.

Image Quality

The DMC-TZ101 reached the high border resolution of about 1622 LP/bra at ISO 125, which 1600 falls LP/bra and ISO level to ISO in continuous large increments of each 100. In parallel, the dead leaves values move first at a high level, which indicates a good overall fine representation of the camera at low ISO levels. The noise has up to ISO 800 well into the handle, inconspicuous even at ISO 1600 with a UN of 1.7. The TZ101 relatively skillfully engages in signal processing, so the images are of course reflected. The edge profile suggests but very well with eye-catching peaks balanced contrast rise on brighter and darker side at high-contrast structures. So there may be artifacts. Also the fine drawing strong, like the DL values from ISO decreases 800th color variations, however, occur only scattered and hardly in the red and purple tones. The performance drop from ISO 100 to 400 is ok. Details lack visible at higher sensitivities.

Conclusion

The TZ101 offers much zoom in a small space at an above-average compact camera image quality as a travel camera. Comparing the TZ101 but with the Sony RX100 IV, the worse fine detail at higher ISO values is striking. Also the auto focus should work a little faster in low light conditions. As a whole but convincing facilities including viewfinder and Flash, handling and price – an attractive camera for the trip.
