What Bike Lights to Buy

Any bike must include lighting.

Legislation in the Bike Lighting: Bonds

In France, the Highway Code requires cyclists riding at night to be equipped:

  • a headlight white or yellow
  • a red rear light
  • a reflector before white
  • a red rear reflector
  • reflectors on the pedals
  • side reflectors

At night or when visibility is reduced on the roads, the rider should also wear a high visibility vest.

Lighting on the Bike: Where to Put It?

The bike is equipped with lights and reflective elements. The bike is light:

  • on the front wheel,
  • on the rear wheel.

The reflective elements are:

  • on the shelves,
  • the cyclist himself.

Bike Lights: Dynamo, Batteries and LED

There are several solutions for the lighting of a bike.

Lighting Dynamo: The Most Common

The generator is a magnet generator that converts the force exerted on the pedals electricity:

  • this electricity powers the front and rear lights of the bike,
  • a dynamo provides an alternating current on 6 volt, 3 watt, 0.5 amps.

It offers unlimited autonomy, but this autonomy stops when the rider no longer pedal.

To keep some lighting during the downtime, it is possible to install a capacitor.

Note: On the lamp is more powerful than the rear lamp.

There are two types of dynamo:

Types of dynamo Principle Location
Dynamo forward
  • Provides a powerful lighting, despite a loss of energy.
  • Resists rain and wind.
Placed on the hub of the front wheel.
The bottle dynamo
  • Needs to be triggered to operate.
  • To do this, simply push the bottle in contact with the tire.
  • Cheap, it is also more fragile and friction emits a characteristic noise.
Placed on the rear wheel.

The lighting Batteries: the Simpler but Limited Autonomy

Dynamos battery does not need bearings with wheels. They can be fixed or mobile.

In mobility, they arise with a hook:

  • on the helmet,
  • on the handlebar,
  • on the rack,
  • under the seat.

However, their autonomy is limited.

Bike LED Lighting: in addition

In addition to conventional lighting, it is quite possible to add an LED headlight. It recharges during the day, thanks to the sun.

This lighting, less powerful, provides additional visibility during sunset while waiting to turn a more powerful lamp.

In case of default of the sun, the lamp provides a rechargeable backup battery to an electrical outlet.

Bike Types of Lighting: Comparative

Here is a summary table of the different characteristics of each type of bike lights:

Table of type of lights bike

Bike lights Advantages disadvantages
Dynamo
  • Unlimited free lighting.
  • system installation and commissioning simple and durable operation.
  • Cheap.
  • Do not work while stopped.
  • Noisy.
battery diode Simple, effective, offers light continuously. lighting fee and limited.
lamp LED
  • Single supplement to see and be seen.
  • free and unlimited energy.
  • Works only when it was sunny.
  • Low lighting.

Reflective Elements: Reflectors, Jackets, etc.

A reflective element is an object that landed on the bike or the driver, reflected the lights of headlights or streetlights. There are different types of reflective elements:

  • the reflector: mirror reflecting light,
  • the reel side reflector,
  • the pedal reflector,
  • the high visibility vest: the famous “yellow vest”
  • reflective clothing,
  • reflective armband.
