Cabaña, from the Latin capanna (“hut”), is a rustic construction that is made with poor materials and is usually used as a home for humble people. The cabins, in general, are built with wood and reeds. For example: “When I arrived from the interior, I had to settle in a cabin that had no running water or electricity”, “The police raided the cabin of the lineman who was accused of destruction by a merchant”, “Until I get a better employment, we will have to continue living in this precarious cabin ”.
According to DigoPaul, the notion of cabin is usually applied to housing in rural areas. In the Middle Ages, the cabins were destined to the peasants’ shelter and they also used to refer to a plot of land and a barn attached to the residence. The term, in some Latin American countries, is used to name the rural establishment where purebred cattle are raised: “Yesterday I bought meat from Cabaña Santa María to prepare a barbecue”, “When I go to Córdoba, I always stop at a cabin at the side of the route to buy sausages and achuras ”.
However, we cannot ignore the fact that herd is a term that is also frequently used to refer to the entire group of livestock that has an owner, a land or even a country. Thus, for example, it is usually spoken in this sense of a cabin in general or with an emphasis on specific species such as what would be the wool cabin.
Very in relation to the previous meaning there is also what we know as the cabin path. It is a term that is used within the livestock field to refer to the ravine, that is, to the road that exists in certain territories for the cattle of the area to circulate through it.
At present, cabin is also used to name the house that is built in tourist destinations and that is intended for rest and leisure. Unlike the original meaning, in this case the concept does not refer to a precarious construction, but often it is luxurious cabins with a great variety of comforts and services: “This summer I will go to a cabin on the riverbank”, “My family rented a cabin with a pool for the weekend. “
One of the works considered classics of Literature has in its title precisely the word that we are analyzing. It is the book “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, which was published in 1852 and was written by the American writer Harriet Beecher Stowe.
The story that is told in this narrative is that of the life of Tom, an African-American slave who must face all kinds of humiliations and contempt from those who consider him an inferior being. In this way, not only the essence of what the phenomenon of slavery was but also the cruelty that man can achieve is shown. Likewise, special emphasis is also placed on the role that religion played in this regard.
