What Is PHP? What Is It For?

WHAT IS PHP?

PHP is a programming language widely used by developers around the world to build a series of applications, such as dynamic websites, as it allows interaction with the user through links, forms and URL parameters.

Created in 1994 and with the source code published the following year, it was originally written by Rasmus Lerdorf under the acronym for Personal Home Page. Initially, Rasmus’s primary goal was to replace through PHP the set of Perl scripts that was used to keep your personal web page in the air.

With the increasing evolution of technology, the developer rewrote the language as a script engine, that is, as a program run on the server side (not the user) capable of interpreting php scripts and generating HTML pages. As it was also able to interpret forms, this language evolution became known as PHP / FI.

EVOLUTION OF PHP

Shortly thereafter, Zeev Suraski developed PHP 3, which for the first time has the object-oriented capability, that is, capable of analyzing, designing and programming application systems based on the interaction of several parts of this program, which is conventionally called objects.

However, still the usability of PHP 3 was restricted, which was solved with PHP 4, which provided a greater number of resources in relation to object orientation. Currently, PHP 5 is used, which has as main difference in relation to PHP 4 the fact of having pointers, which in practice means that when a software is updated, all its versions are also, which was not the case. previous version.

Nowadays, the acronym PHP indicates the expression Hipertext Processor and is very used for construction of web applications. It supports a large number of servers and protocols and runs on various operating systems.

MAIN PHP APPLICATIONS

As already said, PHP has its main use in web applications. This is because, unlike programming languages like Javascript, which has a similar function, PHP runs server side, not on the client machine. This means that in addition to sending pure HTML to the client, PHP can still interact with existing applications on the server, such as the database, without having to expose the source code to the client.

As such, it is ideal for developing programs that need to deal with sensitive information, since passwords and other non-transferable personal information will not be shown.

In this way, with the use of the PHP language it  is possible to carry out a series of applications. Among them, by way of example, we highlight:

  • Construction of e-commerce platforms;
  • Development of online communities;
  • Development of applications for Facebook;
  • Creation of image galleries;
  • Creation of WordPress plugins;
  • Development of graphical user interface (requires high level of language knowledge).

In this way, and even taking into account that PHP has not yet reached the state of art of several other programming languages, it is a fantastic development tool and it has several advantages in its use.
